BIO:
Edyta was born in a worker-peasant household in northern Poland. After the fall of the Soviet Union, her family emigrated to New Jersey where she grew up in a Slavic immigrant community near Trenton. Her Ph.D. traces how peasants, workers, worker-peasants, nomenklatura, and the state in northern Poland have employed a strategy they call ‘kombinacja’ to survive economic transitions into and out of socialism. As a postdoc fellow, Edyta will return to Trenton to investigate how Polish cleaning services also utilize transnational kombinacja to get by under capitalism. Her book manuscript will combine findings from both studies.
