Description

The map indicates handcrafted signs observed along Shawmut Avenue in the South End. The red markers indicate signs written in Chinese, the purple indicate signs written in both Chinese and English, and the blue indicate signs written in just English. One sign in the window of a laundromat announcing its closure. It read, “We are officially closed! Thank you for a great 15 yrs. Your loyalty will never be forgotten. Thank you. Jody.” This sign hints at the story of a local business that had been in operation for 15 years and an owner who had positive relationships with loyal customers. Despite this history, the business is closing, possibly due to the owner’s personal reasons and/or reasons related to gentrification.
