Description

Looking down Bunker Hill Street in Charlestown, it can be startling to see the juxtaposition of two worlds. On one side, there are wealthy townhouses, and on the other are long brick buildings, the Bunker Hill Housing Projects. I chose the number of doorways with flower boxes as an indicator, and the map shows these counts along with income disparities throughout the region. I found a very sharp disparity in the number of flower boxes in the wealthier parts of the town in comparison with almost no flower boxes in the poorer areas. There were few areas that were in between the two extremes. In my conversations with residents, the most emphasized point was the lack of middle income housing opportunities. This is mainly because of the extreme gentrification occurring in the area, an example of which is shown in the accompanying photo.
